It was way overdue. I have been away for a long period and selling my house so it has been impossible to find the time to go to my woods. I have missed a lot of the spring and everything is looking lush and fresh and very green now. I stepped out of my van to this sight. For a few seconds it made no sense, a large fallen tree but it looked unfamiliar. Then I realised it was one of the two oaks that I had supported a tarp between, to cover some logs. I was quite shocked as I hadn’t noticed that the tree was diseased. Clearly there had been strong winds when I was away, the roots had died and not been able to support it any longer. Initially I was sad but having accepted it is a natural occurrence in nature, I rather like it as a feature. It is safe for now and I will leave it for mother nature to do what she will with it.

I started my usual walkabout to see what was going on in my woods. To my disappointment I found another fallen tree. This does sadden me as it is one of my favourites, a very old gnarly crab apple. It also must have had it’s roots weakened by disease but may still be drawing water from the ground as the leaves are still green. I hope it survives a few more years.

The wild garlic is in full flower now. I love them. They remind me of a firework starburst.

There are a couple of natural holes in the base of trees where I know small birds have nested in the past. It is very hard to get photos due to the darkness but I managed to get this shot of two young birds in one of them.

I noticed that my pond had become a mass of soggy dead leaves from the overhead beech trees. It doesn’t really function as a living pond but it is a useful addition anyway, where birds can bathe and drink, along with other small animals and insects. I spent a lot of time clearing as much debris as I could and now it’s looking more like a place that visiting wildlife might be able to use again.

It was a weird mix of weather. Rainy when I arrived followed by sun for a couple of hours. Rolling thunder clattered around but the rain held off for another hour, then it poured down. I retreated to the shelter, sat inside and enjoyed the spectacle as it poured through the leaves and made that lovely pattering sound on the roof.
The rain cleared again and I did a few small jobs and enjoyed another walkabout taking photos. Not sure when I can find the time for another visit soon but will leave you with some photos.
